Born in Co. Meath. Labourer. Admitted to Sydney gaol. Sentenced to death for burglary at Brandon. Executed 21 June 1836
Details:
On Tuesday morning, the three unhappy culprits named James Cook, James Lovell, and James Treal, underwent the Extreme penalty of the law at the usual place of execution in the Sydney gaol. Cooks conviction was for a rape, committed in the neighbourhood of Campbell Town ; Lovells for burglary in the district of the Hunter, (Brandon) and Treals for felony in the neighbourhood of Brandon Cook was attended by the Rev. W. Cowper, the other two professing the catholic faith, by Mr. McEnro. After ascending the fatal scaffold, which they did with every appearance of resignation, and the rope being adjusted round the neck of each, at a given signal the drop fell, and they were launched into eternity. Treal before being turned off, avowed his innocence of the crime for which he was about to suffer.
